Novice/Open Handling

The is a perfect class for people who are just starting to compete or are thinking about competing soon. Everyone is welcome even if you do not want to compete.

This class meets 1 time for 3 hours

In this class students learn the following:

  • How to accurately identify the dog’s path,
  • Make informed decisions about which handling maneuvers to use when and where

Handling maneuvers such as front crosses, pulls, blind crosses, rear crosses, and serpentines will be defined and discussed. Standard course configurations such as 180’s, pinwheels, and serpentines will also be defined and discussed

Handlers will learn about how their motion, position, direction, and speed affect the dog’s path, and everyone will have the opportunity to learn how to properly use these skills on the course

Students will also be provided with valuable information on teaching obstacle independence. Obstacle independence is required if you want to move away from the dog while they are running

Prerequisites:

  • Dogs must be able to safely complete Jumps, Tunnels. Weave poles and contacts are a bonus.

  • Dogs must be able to rest quietly in their crate between runs

  • Dog must be able to safely work off leash around other dogs and people
